楽曲解説
「人間の罪」が白いものを何色に染めるのか、という問いが三度繰り返され、その対象は「美しき白い月」から「汚れなき白い花」、最後には「清らかな白い雲」へ移っていきます。何も刻まれていない白さに対し、争い・憎しみ・裏切りは月を、愛欲・快楽・束縛は花を、略奪・暴食・怠慢は雲を侵す色として並びます。月には慟哭や激昂や復讐が重ねられ、花は誘惑や色欲や背徳をまとって舞い散り、愛情・微笑・安息までが「闇」となって燻るため、本来は救いや安らぎに結びつく言葉も罪の側へ反転していきます。
後半の「神が犯した罪は／罪を産みだしたこと」「人類が犯した罪は／罪を育んだこと」は、罪の起源と増大の責任を分けながら、どちらも免罪しません。さらに、すべてが悪魔の掌で転がると置くことで、神と人類をめぐる大きな問いさえ、悪魔に操られる構図の内側へ収めています。「paint」「crowd」「fill」と変化する英語の反復も、七つの罪が宇宙を染める段階から群がり、ついには満たしてしまうまでの拡大を端的に示しています。
